To celebrate the momentous return of The Tragically Hip to Calgary JACK will become GORD FM today! We will pay homage to the band’s nine #1 albums and numerous awards – including 14 JUNO Awards – and reminisce about the 25+ times The Hip have played our city since the formed.

And today, to thank The Hip for their years of music and memories, we officially declare it “Tragically Hip Day” in the City of Calgary!!

There has been an outpouring of support from Canadian citizens since the recent announcement that Gord Downie has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The Tragically Hip is the quintessential Canadian rock band. Their albums have been the soundtrack to so many lives for three decades. Their songs represent real people, real places and true Canadians. Hailing from Kingston, Ontario, The Hip formed in 1984 and 9 of their 14 studio albums have reached # 1 in Canada. They’ve also won numerous Canadian Music Awards including 14 Junos. They represent Canada just as much as maple syrup. Whether it’s a Road Trip, camping, a hockey game, a wedding or Canada Day, you can guarantee there’s been a song from the Tragically Hip playing.

Tragically Hip has not only made a strong cultural impact on our city, but they’ve also made an enormous economic impact too. Since 1988, they have played here 23 times and if you count their 2 upcoming shows in August, that’s 25 concerts in Cowtown! They have played various venues in Calgary from the Max Bell Centre, Race City, Fort Calgary, Millennium Park, Mac Hall, The Westward Club, the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and the Saddledome. It’s safe to say they’ve left their mark on our fair city! A portion of the proceeds from their current tour will be donated to the Sunnybrook Foundation, which is a premier academic health sciences centre at the U of T, with a vision to invent the future of health care.

And we’re not stopping there!  All day today on GORD FM, you’ll hear their greatest songs ever recorded, interviews with the band members and stories behind the music.  Plus tonight after the show, GORD FM presents “THE CONCERT AFTER THE CONCERT” playing non-stop Tragically Hip songs to keep the concert vibe alive.

Hey, take a listen to the 1-hour radio special that our sister station in Edmonton, SONiC 102.9, created for the Hip. It’s a tribute to Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip, hosted by SONiC morning show host, Garner Andrews. It celebrates the legacy of the band and features memorable stories from Sam Roberts, July Talk, Arkells, journalist Alan Cross, and more. Check it out!

Thank you, Tragically Hip!
